THE STORY:
My name is Jamie, and I am an underwater and landscape photographer from Las Vegas, Nevada. I love making art out of my photographs.
I began scuba diving in 2004 and brought a camera on every dive. A point-and-shoot didn't do my adventures any justice, but my goal at the time was to show my mom what I saw below. It didn't take long before I wanted to bring the unique beauty of the underwater world to the surface for all to appreciate.
Unfortunately, adult obligations and living in the hot, dry desert have made this dream challenging. "Work" is the most significant hurdle that seems to keep me bound near home. However, I have patience and perseverance, and even though I didn't get to live near the ocean, I would find a way to visit as often as possible.
Over the years, I would travel to the coast with my scuba diving companions. The smell of the sea air filled my lungs, and I could not get enough. Diving deep below the ocean's surface, feeling the cold salt water on my skin infused me with creativity. I tried to capture stunning underwater photos every chance I could.
On this particular day, my dive began as planned. I plunged into the water, anticipating what I might get to see. I felt the immediate sensation of the cold water outside of my dry suit, but it didn't phase me. I wiped away the bubbles from my mask. I quickly descended through the thermocline, not wasting even a second of my time underwater. The deeper I went, the more the visibility increased. I took a moment to get oriented and quickly realized I was surrounded by kelp as far as the eye could see! I set out to find creative ways to photograph this overlooked beauty and tried lighting it from the back and side. I even used additional lights to achieve both at the same time.
I was captivated by nature's balance and uniformity, and I envisioned how this particular set of fronds might look in black and white. I spent the dive snapping from every angle and hoped my work of art would develop as planned.
Once topside, I scanned my photos, reviewing what I had captured. One stood out to me in particular. I enjoyed the darkness of the background and how the kelp looked like it was the only strand reaching up from the Abyss. I immediately marked it for my shortlist to edit and share and felt accomplished in my beautiful capture.
